Militants Bomb a Girls School in Northwestern Pakistan District Bordering Afghanistan

No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the Wednesday night attack on the only girls’ school in Shewa, a town in North Waziristan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which borders Afghanistan, according to local police chief Amjad Wazir.

UNICEF condemned the bombing, calling it a “despicable and cowardly act that could jeopardize the future of many young and talented girls.”

Police chief Wazir stated that the assailants overpowered the school guard before planting explosives at the private Aafia Islamic Girls Model School, which educates 150 students.

It is suspected that Islamic militants, specifically the Pakistani Taliban, may be responsible, as they have previously targeted girls’ schools in the province, opposing female education.

UNICEF’s representative in Pakistan, Abdullah Fadil, issued a statement condemning the “destruction of a girls’ school in a remote and underserved area” as a grave crime that hinders national progress. He referenced Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s declaration of an education emergency on Wednesday and his commitment to enrolling 26 million out-of-school children.
