TTP Terror Surge: Pakistan Threatens Strikes in Afghanistan – 2024

Pakistan’s Defense Minister, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, recently expressed frustration over a surge in terrorist attacks within Pakistan. He suggested targeting “terror havens” in Afghanistan, a move he believes is justified under international law due to the alleged safe haven provided to groups like the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan by the Taliban regime.

“Pakistan prioritizes its territorial integrity,” Minister Asif stated. “The TTP operates from Afghanistan and maintains networks within Pakistan. Shouldn’t harboring these groups be considered a violation of international law?”

Since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, Pakistan has witnessed a significant increase in terrorist incidents. The Pakistani Taliban or Tehrik-Taliban-Pakistan, known for its ideological ties to the Afghan Taliban, has intensified attacks on Pakistani security forces.

A 2023 report by a Pakistani think tank documented a 65% rise in terrorism-related deaths in Pakistan, with the TTP identified as the primary perpetrator.

Bordering provinces like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan have been particularly affected. These regions reportedly accounted for over 90% of fatalities and 84% of attacks in the past year, according to the report.

Pakistani political leaders have highlighted the deteriorating security situation. One leader, Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman, reportedly pointed out the inability of police to patrol certain areas due to the presence of armed militants.

Pakistan claims militant groups find safe haven in Afghanistan, receiving training and resources to launch cross-border attacks. Estimates from a Pakistani official suggest that thousands of TTP militants might be present in Afghanistan.

In March 2024, Pakistan conducted airstrikes inside Afghanistan targeting TTP affiliates. Pakistan has consistently urged the Taliban to take action against the TTP and hand over militants operating from Afghan soil.

The Taliban, however, denies supporting TTP activities in Pakistan and claims no involvement in recent security incidents. Spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid previously stated that the Taliban are not responsible for Pakistan’s internal security issues
