China Pressures Taliban to Prevent Attacks in Pakistan, Offers Economic Aid

Chinese diplomats have intervened due to Pakistan’s failure to curb terrorist attacks from Afghanistan. Beijing has proposed significant investments in Afghanistan if the Taliban can restrain the militants responsible for these attacks, analysts report.

Two sources in Islamabad reveal that China is pressuring Afghanistan’s Taliban regime to prevent cross-border attacks on Chinese interests in Pakistan. This move comes as Pakistan struggles to stop the surge in terrorist activities from Afghanistan and Iran.

Feeling “back-stabbed” by the Afghan Taliban’s refusal to control the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Chinese diplomats are exploring alternative ways to persuade the Taliban. Beijing’s discontent stems from a March suicide bombing that killed five Chinese nationals in Pakistan, linked to TTP militants from Khost province, Afghanistan.

China’s recent diplomatic efforts have included offers to invest in Afghanistan’s mineral and power sectors, contingent on the Taliban reining in Pakistani insurgents and addressing concerns over ISIS-Khorasan’s presence.
